Castro Verde

Castro Verde is a town located in Campo Branco (White Plains) of the Baixo Alentejo sub-region of Portugal. The area of Castro Verde dates back 200,000BC. The term “Castro” is a combination of Celtic, Roman, Iberian, and Spanish cultures that have left their mark and traditions in today’s Castro villages and their people. "Verde" means green and refers to "new." Many civilizations settled in Castro Verde for the abundant agriculture, livestock, mining, and grain.

For many centuries the people of Castro Verde have established their unique cultural identity in the form of architecture, arts, music, song, and poetry. By the 19th century, this cultural identity focused on integrating Roman and Islamic architecture in modern eco-architecture. Castro Verde’s rich history is kept alive in its arts and is prominent today upon visiting this town.
